NYPD to Crack Down on Speeding

Speeders beware: New York police are launching a 48-hour speed ticketing blitz, starting Tuesday at midnight. Fines for speeding range from $90 to $600, and can result in points on a driver’s license. Another recent NYPD crackdown resulted in more than 5,000 tickets for drivers using cell phones and drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians.

“Drivers should be mindful that speed cameras are in operation on many New York City streets,” the NYPD said in a statement. Not as many as the Mayor and City Council want, though – local officials are seeking permission from Albany to control speed and red light cameras, something currently restricted by state law. The city can currently operate 20 speed cameras, although only 5 are operational. A bill pending in Albany would add an additional 120 cameras, but all of them are only on during school hours.

Street safety advocates are pushing to lower city speed limits to 20 miles per hour, but the current limit is 30, unless otherwise posted. Slow zones, where speeds are lowered to 25 miles per hour, are spreading throughout the city.

WNYC is tracking moving violations ticketing across the city. The most recent data available is from March.
